INEC, security agencies vow to enforce campaign rules in Nasarawa

​‌‌‍‌‍‍⁠⁠‌‍‍‌‌​​‍⁠THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in collaboration with security agencies in Nasarawa State, has pledged to strictly enforce campaign guidelines and electoral laws ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mallam Muhammed Abubakar, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, stated this on Tuesday in Lafia at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). Abubakar said the commission would strengthen its collaboration with security agencies to tackle emerging and anticipated challenges ahead of the elections. He said the collaboration would ensure that political parties and candidates adhered strictly to campaign regulations and contributed to a peaceful and conducive environment for all parties. 'We will not condone hate speech, incitement, political violence and defacement of public property in accordance with the Constitution and Electoral Act. 'Political campaigns must be issue-based and in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC regulations,' he said. The REC urged security agencies to be proactive in monitoring campaign activities and arrest violators, irrespective of their political affiliation. According to him, the credibility of the elections depends largely on the environment in which they are conducted. 'Voters must feel safe to exercise their franchise and electoral personnel must be secured to carry out their duties without fear or intimidation. 'I am confident that through our robust collaboration, shared intelligence and unified determination, ICCES in the state will set a high standard for election security,' he said. Abubakar said the commission had commenced activities toward the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections. 'We carried out continuous voter registration, which ended on July 11, 2026, issued the notice of polls and election, released the campaign timetable and published the lists of candidates,' he said. He said with the completion of the key preliminary activities, the commission's focus was now on ensuring a safe, peaceful, transparent and credible electoral environment. The REC appreciated members of the committee for their roles in the successful conduct of the June 20 bye-election in Nasarawa North Senatorial District. He urged them to sustain the cooperation and commitment toward ensuring the success of the 2027 general elections. The meeting was attended by Shetima Mohammed, Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa and co-Chairman of ICCES, as well as heads of other security agencies in the state.
