Spider-Man: Brand New Day's phenomenal box office earnings have broken multiple major records since its premiere. Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman believes that this success stems from the relatable human experience conveyed in the Marvel movie.
In a recent interview with Variety at the Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Rothman reflected on Brand New Day's box office success and why audiences continue to fill theaters. According to him, the Marvel movie is 'not so much a superhero film, but a 'super-person' film.'
'The reason that movie has resonated all around the world is because it's about a lonely guy,' Rothman added. 'It's like, yeah, it's about friendship; it's very human. It's very emotional.' The Sony chief said, 'It's got plenty of whiz-bang, but that's not what the secret is. The secret is it's a relatable story that almost everybody has related to.'
Tom Holland's Peter Parker goes through an extremely difficult time in Brand New Day. Not only is he grappling with the grief of losing his Aunt May, but his best friend Ned and the love of his life, MJ, also have no recollection of who he is due to Doctor Strange's spell. The Marvel movie explores a darker side of the superhero that has not been seen before in the MCU.
Despite the initial bleak tone, Brand New Day ends on an inspiring note, with Peter vowing not to carry the burden alone. During a visit to May's grave, he says, 'You'd be happy to know that I've decided I'm not going to do this alone anymore.' The movie ends with Peter reintroducing himself to his friends, heralding a hopeful future.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed a worldwide total of $2.408 billion, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time, after Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. Meanwhile, fans are also looking forward to another potential box-office phenomenon from the MCU: Avengers: Doomsday.
