‘Tracker' Season 4 Hints at One Major Shift to Justin Hartley's Colter Shaw Storyline

Tracker is returning to CBS next month, but things may look slightly different for Colter Shaw. Ahead of the Tracker season 4 premiere, executive producer Elwood Reid shared what potential changes may be on the horizon for our favorite rewardist, including a storyline shift that would shake up his love life in a way we haven't seen before. Up until now, Colter Shaw has largely operated as a 'lone wolf,' occasionally crossing paths with Billie Matalon, played by his real-life wife, Sofia Pernas. He also works closely with Reenie Greene, portrayed by Fiona Rene, with whom he shares a complicated past and lingering chemistry. Previous seasons have also explored his history with former love interest Camille Picket, played by Floriana Lima. However, there's no serious, stable and long-term love interest—yet. That may all change with season 4, as Reid told Us Weekly, 'One of the things I think we're trying to do this year is open up life outside of the office.' 'With Colter, we're going to see the buds of a relationship forming,' he expressed, which is nice, since a lot of the strongest scenes involve Colter working alongside his team, which also includes his brother, Russell Shaw, played by fan-favorite guest star Jensen Ackles, and his IT right-hand man, Randy, played by Chris Lee. 'That's one thing that I think is unique to this season, which is we just never see Colter in a social and possibly romantic situation outside of the Billie universe,' Reid noted, expressing that the situation would be 'much different' from his relationship with Billie. Reid continued, 'Then the other thing, which is just an overall theme of the show, is how can we test and challenge Colter morally and physically.' Colter spends much of his time living out of his Airstream and traveling around the U.S. to take on cases, so the love interest would have to play into that lifestyle somehow. Audiences could also see Colter's struggle to manage a full-time relationship with his unconventional job. 'We're not just jumping right into it. We're just showing the buds of it. This is the seed we're planting, but what would happen if that relationship got leveraged against him somehow or that person or somebody close to that person got into a situation that needed Colter's help?' Reid explained, questioning, 'Would that blow the relationship up? Would that deepen the relationship?' While Billie and Colter make sense on paper, they're cut from the same cloth and 'do the same thing, so they know the rules.' It's fun to watch their dynamic on-screen, but they don't have the staying power. Reid wants to explore, 'What would happen if you started to put strings on there?' 'And putting the Billie thing aside for a second, what would happen if there was someone who challenged him emotionally in a way where maybe his job comes into cross purposes with that? That's the thing we're toying with. We've shot two scenes with this person, so [we're] just seeing if it'll work,' he expressed. Tracker, which premiered in 2024, will also see another major change as production moves from Vancouver to Los Angeles.
