Alex Eala puts PH duty first, eyes Asiad stint

MANILA — World No. 18 Alexandra Eala is putting national duty ahead of a major WTA tournament, choosing to pursue a stint for the Philippines in the 2026 Asian Games even if it means skipping the mandatory China Open in Beijing. The Filipina tennis star has made clear her desire to wear the national colors in Japan later this month, with the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) now seeking an exemption from the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) to shield her from possible sanctions. The Asian Games schedule overlaps with the WTA 1000 China Open, which Eala is expected to miss should she push through with her national-team commitment. For Eala, however, the rare opportunity to compete for the Philippines in the continental showpiece carries special significance. 'I love playing and competing with the Philippine team. In the SEA Games, the Asian Games, I've also done [that],' Eala said. The 21-year-old said competing alongside fellow Filipino athletes has given her some of her most memorable experiences, particularly during the Southeast Asian Games last December. 'I think it's a really fun environment, and I love being with the team, especially this last SEA Games in December. I had such a great time. I think they're really memories that stick with me,' she said. The Asian Games being staged only once every four years also weighed heavily on her decision. 'And the Asian Games happen once every four years. I just found myself drawn to competing in that, aside from other stuff,' she added. PHILTA secretary-general and Navotas City Mayor John Tiangco said the association has formally notified the WTA of Eala's commitment to the Philippine team and requested an exemption from any penalty for missing the China Open. Eala enters the Asian swing coming off a breakthrough campaign at the US Open, where she reached the third round for the first time before bowing to American Iva Jovic in a tight three-set battle, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
