56 Nigerian Migrants Deported from Libya's Benghazi

Libyan authorities have deported 56 Nigerian migrants from Libya's Benghazi through Benina International Airport in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The Greater Benghazi branch of the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency said the group comprised 34 men and 22 women. The deportation took place after the authorities completed the required legal and security procedures. According to the agency, the group included migrants suffering from medical conditions. Some of those deported were also subject to security restrictions or other measures, though the agency provided no details about the nature of the cases. The operation was coordinated with the IOM, which assists migrants in Libya with return travel and reintegration support. It was not immediately clear whether all 56 Nigerians travelled under the organization's Voluntary Humanitarian Return programme. Benina International Airport has become one of the main departure points for migrant repatriation flights from eastern Libya. Libyan migration authorities have conducted several operations through the airport in cooperation with international organizations and the migrants' countries of origin. Libya remains a major transit and destination country for migrants from across Africa. Some travel to the country in search of employment, while others attempt to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. The IOM said in June 2025 that it had helped more than 100,000 migrants return home voluntarily from Libya since its return programme began in 2015.
