Kanchipuram-Vandavasi Road: Will the Four-Lane Corridor Boost Connectivity Across 4 Districts in North Tamil Nadu?

Under the Chief Minister's Road Development Plan (CMRDP), the present two lane Kanchipuram-Vandavasi Road is being converted into a four lane corridor. This is done to reduce the industrial traffic, reduce the travel time, along with mitigating the possible accidents, as this is one of North Tamil Nadu's busiest roads. Advertisment Why This Road Matters The Kanchipuram-Vandavasi Road is the main route connecting Kanchipuram to Tindivanam, Polur, Salem Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Puducherry and Thanjavur. This road carries over 12,000 vehicles every day, including more than 3,000 heavy vehicles, most of them heading to or from the Cheyyar and Vembakkam SIPCOT industrial complexes. Over the years, heavy traffic near Mangalkoodru and the Cheyyar SIPCOT area has delayed the movement of raw materials and finished goods, along with making the road accident prone for daily commuters and industrial workers. The Widening Project - Phase by Phase The government has ordered acquisition of 307 acres across 34 villages, 14 in Vandavasi, 7 in Cheyyar, 8 in Keezh Pennathur, and 5 in Tiruvannamalai for this widening project under both phases. Phase 1: Mangal to Manampathi junction, 9 km, costing ₹78 crore and includes widening of 7 bridges, 6 new small bridges, and storm water drains for flood-prone residential stretches Phase 2: 72 km stretch from Manampathi, near Cheyyar SIPCOT, to Tiruvannamalai, while the land acquisition and design work underway Advertisment A new flyover near the Sevilimedu bridge is also planned to reduce the traffic at the start of the corridor, with completion expected by 2028. Connectivity to Ports and Industrial Hubs Once complete, the road will connect with the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) near Manampathi, easing freight movement from the industrial corridor toward Chennai and Ennore ports. There are also plans to link Cheyyar with Oragadam, merging this industrial belt with Chennai's existing industrial network. Wider lanes, better junctions and dedicated town bypasses, including one for Vandavasi, should make the route considerably safer. The upgrade will also benefit daily commuters travelling to Sriperumbudur and Oragadam for work, as well as devotees and tourists visiting the temple town of Kanchipuram from the Vandavasi side. Land in Sriperumbudur is currently quoted in the broad range of ₹3,050 to ₹5,050 per sq. ft, while plots along the Arcot-Cheyyar Road are available from around ₹12100 to ₹18750 per sq ft onwards.Areas like Oragadam, Walajabad and Uthiramerur near Kanchipuram see plotted developments priced roughly between ₹1,300 to ₹4,300 per sq. ft. These prices depend on how close the land is to the highway and industrial zones.
