Epilepsy Ireland brings flagship annual conference back to Cork

Epilepsy Ireland will bring its biggest annual event back to Cork with contributions from Leesiders battling the condition every day. The conference will explore the latest clinical and research developments in Ireland and strives to paint a view of what epilepsy care could look like in 2040. Taking place at the Cork International Hotel on September 19, this year's conference marks the first in Cork since 2019. Attendees will hear about a University College Cork research project, co-funded by Epilepsy Ireland, that is exploring seizure prediction. Cork-born Professor Norman Delanty, an internationally recognised leader in epilepsy treatment and care, will return to his home county to discuss what epilepsy care in Ireland could look like in 2040. The conference will also feature contributions from members of the local epilepsy community such as Cork North Central Labour TD Eoghan Kenny and Óglaigh na hÉireann Sergeant Bernie Hart, who will share their experiences of epilepsy from both lived and parental perspectives. Epilepsy Ireland cite that more than 5,000 people live with the condition across Cork, and Epilepsy Ireland is encouraging both members of the epilepsy community, as well as the wider community to attend. Long-serving local Community Resource Officer Niamh Jones said: 'The conference is always one of the highlights of our annual calendar at Epilepsy Ireland, and as a local Community Resource Officer and proud Cork woman, I'm delighted that it has returned to Cork this year. 'The fantastic range of speakers will provide valuable insights and perspectives, but one of the best things about the conference for me is the sense of community. It gives people with epilepsy and their families the opportunity to meet others, share experiences and learn from one another,' Ms Jones said.
