Maersk Adds New PSS and Congestion Charges on Key Trades

Maersk is introducing new surcharge measures covering Mediterranean exports to North America and cargo moving from Asia and the Middle East to Durban, as the carrier adjusts rates across key trade lanes. From October 5, 2026, Maersk will impose a US$250 per-container Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on shipments from both the West and East Mediterranean to the United States and Canada. The charge applies to dry containers, including 20-foot, 40-foot and 45-foot high-cube equipment, as well as 40-foot high-cube reefers. Maersk is also expanding the scope of its Durban Congestion Fee Destination (CFD) to include cargo originating from the Indian Subcontinent, alongside the Far East Asia and Middle East. The fee applies to containers discharged at Durban and is set at US$250 for 20-foot containers and US$500 for 40-foot containers. The Durban congestion fee will take effect from September 15, with the charge applying regardless of the terminal handling the container. The measures reflect Maersk's latest adjustments to account for seasonal demand and congestion-related operational costs. The new charges are expected to increase shipping costs for exporters and importers on the affected routes, adding to the range of surcharges currently being applied across global container trades.
