This past February, J.Crew's men's creative director, Brendon Babenzien, stepped down to focus on his personal brand, Noah. He left the celebrated Americana clothing brand in much better shape than he found it, with a firm foundation of signature products rooted in its own archive and core national classics. One of the most underrated items developed during Babenzien's tenure is the Heritage 14-ounce Fleece Hoodie. It is a not-so-subtle homage to vintage Champion Reverse Weave sweatshirts, particularly those from the 1990s and 2000s. Better still, J.Crew is offering it at 40 percent off right now. J.Crew's Heritage 14-Ounce Fleece Hoodie is an homage to vintage Champion Reverse Weave hoodies. J.Crew Vintage clothing enthusiasts, such as me, covet older examples of Champion's signature fabric because it was made with a more favorable formula. J.Crew emulates that specific blend and weight with its Heritage 14-ounce Fleece Hoodie. Making weight In practical terms, the weight of fabric is felt in its density. J.Crew's 14-ounce fleece is much denser than Champion's current standard Reverse Weave because it is both thicker and contains a higher percentage of cotton (which is heavier than polyester). The 'C' shifted its signature fabric to a 77/23 cotton-polyester blend as recently as last year, although it is currently advertised at 82/18. J.Crew uses an 84/16 mix, which matches Champion Reverse Weave hoodies in my personal collection from over 15 years ago.
