Hurricanes' Mario Cristobal provides updates on OJ Frederique Jr., Jordan Lyle

Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal on Monday said cornerback OJ Frederique Jr. 'suffered a pretty good injury' in their season-opener against Stanford early with injury. 'He'll be down for a while,' Cristobal said. Frederique started alongside Xavier Lucas at outside cornerback against Stanford but left after just two plays with an apparent shoulder injury after making an open-field tackle on the Cardinal's Benji Blackburn on the opening drive of the eventual 45-6 Miami win. With Frederique sidelined and sophomore Ja'Boree Antoine declared out before the game, the Hurricanes relied primarily on Lucas, Damari Brown and Ethan O'Connor at outside corner for the first three quarters while the starters were on the field. Brown played 55 snaps, Lucas 39 and O'Connor 26. Meanwhile, Cristobal said there is still no update on Jordan Lyle's status as the junior running back continues to await legal clarity following his August arrest. Lyle did not play Friday. Lyle's status has been in limbo since he was arrested in mid-August on a warrant stemming from charges for aggressively fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer and reckless driving in mid-July. Miami used all four of its other primary running backs against Stanford. Mark Fletcher Jr. had 13 carries for 40 yards. CharMar 'Marty' Brown had eight carries for 37 yards and a 5-yard touchdown. Girard Pringle Jr. had six carries for 9 yards. And freshman Javian Mallory had three carries for 31 yards. Sophomore tight end Luka Gilbert and junior safety Dylan Day were the other players who were ruled out for Miami's game against Stanford. The No. 7 Hurricanes play their first home game of the season against Florida A&M on Thursday (8 p.m., ACC Network).
