Gary Jansen is my former editor at Penguin Random House now at Loyola Press. He is author of dozens of books on religion, ghosts, and the supernatural. We discuss: a life spent reading and writing, Gary's childhood growing up extremely poor (he was the child of sixteen and seventeen year old parents), how he got drawn into reading as a kid who wanted to know more about the Force inStar Wars, what is happening in the book industry today, and the benefits of reading and writing for all people not just professional scribblers. One of the benefits according to Gary is 'suffering.' If you're not interested in invisible things, this might not be the conversation for you, as I reference my favorite non-fiction essay on the supernatural by Christian Wiman inHarper'scalledThe Tune Of Things. But if you are interested in those topics, I think you will enjoy our conversation about reading, writing and the nature of reality.Gary Jansen has been on the podcast before to talk about the benefits of gratitude and meditation.
