Morgan County man accused of assaulting grandmother, disabling Life Alert device

A Morgan County man was arrested after law enforcement said he assaulted and held his 80-year-old grandmother against her will for several hours. Kaden Robert Baird, 32, was booked Saturday on suspicion of kidnapping, aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, intentional aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult, damaging or interrupting a communication device and threat of violence, according to a probable cause statement. The woman told deputies Baird, her grandson who lives with her, came into her bedroom early Saturday and repeatedly assaulted her between about 1 and 6:30 a.m., court documents said. She told investigators he punched her, threw her down, twisted her wrists and ankles, struck her with a cellphone and put a finger down her throat, restricting her breathing. The woman was taken to a hospital, where she said an emergency room doctor told her she had fractured bones in her back and a broken left wrist. A deputy reported seeing bruising on her back, shoulder, arms and ankles, as well as an abrasion on her forehead. Investigators said Baird allegedly took and hid the woman's phone, turned off her Wi-Fi and disabled her Life Alert device after she said she wanted to call law enforcement. She also said Baird prevented her from leaving the home until he went to the basement, allowing her to escape. The woman told deputies Baird threatened to kill her family and himself with a firearm, according to court documents. Deputies later arrested Baird, who appeared heavily intoxicated, the affidavit said. ________
