Rare brain surgery saves 7-year-old Labrador's life

Bravo was hit by a speeding car Vadodara: Hit by a speeding car and left with a severe brain injury, seven-year-old Bravo was fighting for his life and had a little chance of survival. But true to his name, the dog refused to give up. Bravo, a Labrador, didn't just survive a gruelling 100-kilometre journey from Godhra to Vadodara but also underwent an advanced surgery at a veterinary clinic on Sep 1. What is possibly the first such surgical procedure on a dog in Gujarat, Dr Ram Kamaliya and his team performed cranioplasty , where the severely damaged portion of the skull was reconstructed using a specially positioned titanium mesh. 'It was a three-hour long surgery that required a lot of skill and patience. Seven-year-old Bravo's condition was very serious. He was nearly comatose and had already suffered a seizure, indicating severe damage to the brain,' he told TOI. 'Bravo had also suffered multiple fractures of the skull and there was dangerous accumulation of blood placing pressure on the brain. So, our surgical team decided to perform an emergency neurosurgery during which craniotomy was performed to access the injured area of the brain,' said Dr Kamaliya, who runs a veterinary hospital in the city. After relieving the blood pressure, the surgeons conducted the cranioplasty. 'It's a landmark achievement in small-animal veterinary neurosurgery in Gujarat and possibly the first such successful surgery,' Dr Kamaliya added. 'Bravo met with an accident on Aug 29 following which we took him to a hospital in Vadodara. Initially we were told that this surgery won't be possible in Gujarat. But we consulted Dr Kamaliya who offered to help and conduct the complicated surgery,' said Manish Mohaniya, a sub-inspector at Kalol police station, who owns the Labrador. 'We had lost all hopes, but Bravo didn't just survive the surgery but is recovering well too. He is eating normally and walking around without assistance,' Mohaniya added.
