Claude's creator is growing at high speed, but fierce competition and colossal compute costs could complicate its path to profit.
Anthropic isn't going to have some run-of-the-mill IPO. Claude's proud parent is looking to make a splash, with the biggest stock launch in history at a rumored $2 trillion valuation. At that size, it'll surpass even SpaceX's $1.75 trillion debut.
Of course, the issue for investors is whether that valuation is justified.
So, let's take a closer look at the AI giant's opportunities, challenges, and the revenue and profit growth that'd be needed to make this company seem like a good investment.
Part 1: How Anthropic got here
Anthropic was essentially born out of a disagreement about where AI was heading.
In 2021, siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei led a group of former OpenAI employees in founding the company, after a dispute over the direction and governance of advanced AI development. Their new company was Anthropic, the chatbot was Claude, and some very deep-pocketed backers (including Amazon and Alphabet) quickly bought into the vision.
And no one has been more on board than Amazon.
The tech behemoth had already invested $8 billion into the AI startup before adding another $5 billion in April, taking its total commitment to $13 billion. And that could rise by another $20 billion if Anthropic hits undisclosed commercial milestones.
But this isn't a one-way relationship. Anthropic has agreed to spend more than $100 billion over ten years on Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies, especially Amazon's Trainium AI chips. The pair have also launched Claude Platform natively on AWS, embedding Claude Code, Artifacts, and collaboration tools directly into services including Bedrock, AWS IAM, and CloudTrail, rather than simply offering Claude through the AWS Marketplace.
That infrastructure is supporting huge growth. Anthropic's annualized revenue run rate climbed from roughly $9 billion at the end of 2025 to more than $65 billion by the end of July 2026.
Anthropic's valuation has responded accordingly. The firm raised $30 billion at a $380 billion valuation in February, before raising another $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation.
And expectations are already stretching it even further: speculation has Anthropic hitting a $2 trillion valuation at IPO.
