ADC In Rivers Slams Wike Over Comments On Amaechi, Calls Them 'insensitive'

By Blessing Nsane The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has responded to comments made by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike about the party's vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, ahead of the 2027 elections. Wike spoke on Saturday, September 6, 2026 during a reception held for him by the City Boy Movement in Omagwa, Ikwerre LGA. He claimed Amaechi would not be able to compete in Rivers in 2027. According to him, the former governor would withdraw early on election day because 'there is no structure to back him.' He also said winning in Ubima, Amaechi's hometown, would be difficult for him. The remarks drew a quick response from the ADC in Rivers. In a statement released in Port Harcourt on Monday, September 7, the State Chairman, Dr. Chukwudi Dimkpa, said elections are decided at the polls, not by public predictions. 'Democracy does not work that way. No individual can announce election results before votes are cast and counted. It is INEC that has that responsibility, not any politician,' Dimkpa said. The ADC chairman also faulted the timing of the reception. He noted that it took place on the same day Amaechi was laying his mother to rest in Ubima, with mourners from across the country in attendance. 'It was unfortunate that while people were gathered to mourn, the same road was used for a political gathering that turned into attacks. That was not the right time for that,' he added. Dimkpa questioned why politics could not be put aside for a day, saying the focus should have been on humanity rather than rivalry. Analysts in the state say the back-and-forth shows how tense politics in Rivers could get as 2027 approaches. Ikwerre LGA, including Ubima, is expected to be a key area to watch during the campaigns.
