Rs 19 crore sewer network approved for Sectors 77-80, work to take 2 years

The project will involve laying nearly 8km of sewer lines, ranging from 600mm to 1,200mm in diameter Gurgaon: The Haryana govt on Monday approved a Rs 19 crore project to build a master sewerage network across Sectors 77 to 80, where several residential societies are now occupied but civic infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with rapid development. The project will involve laying nearly 8km of sewer lines, ranging from 600mm to 1,200mm in diameter, along with manholes and other supporting infrastructure. However, residents may have to wait up to two years before the network becomes operational. The project was cleared at the 10th meeting of the high powered works purchase committee (HPWPC), chaired by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini in Chandigarh on Monday. The sewer network is expected to address a long-standing problem in the New Gurgaon belt, where several housing societies currently depend on temporary arrangements for sewage disposal. In the absence of a master network, some societies hire private tankers to transport sewage, while untreated wastewater has also been reported to enter open drains and vacant plots. Residents said the practice creates foul smells, mosquito breeding and the risk of groundwater contamination. During the monsoon, wastewater from temporary disposal points can overflow onto roads and surrounding areas, worsening local civic problems. GMDA CEO PC Meena said the authority was expanding the city's sewerage network in phases to meet both existing and future requirements. 'With the approval of the Sectors 77-80 project, sewerage connectivity in New Gurgaon will be further strengthened,' Meena said. According to GMDA, sewer lines in Sectors 1 to 57 have already been laid and are operational, while work in Sectors 58 to 67 has also been completed. Work in Sectors 68 to 76 is underway and is targeted for completion by June 2027. Sewerage works in Sectors 104 to 115 are being executed separately and are scheduled to be completed by March 2027. In neighbouring Sectors 81 to 103, HSVP is laying sewer lines. Around 25km of lines in Sectors 81 to 87 has been completed and handed over to GMDA. However, about 1,700 metres remain incomplete at some locations because of ongoing litigation. Officials have been asked to explore alternative alignments wherever feasible. The new network will also need adequate sewage treatment capacity. GMDA is upgrading the existing sewage treatment plants at Behrampur and Dhanwapur and developing new STPs at Naurangpur and Sector 107 to handle the city's growing sewage load.
