Israel is facing growing diplomatic pressure after three years of war in Gaza. Its relations with several traditional Asian partners have also become strained. The issue became visible at the United Nations General Assembly last month. Dozens of delegates left the hall during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech. Representatives from Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh were among those who walked out.
In East Asia, Japan and South Korea have publicly raised concerns over Israel's actions in Gaza. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi defended the International Criminal Court against US sanctions. She also reaffirmed Japan's support for the court during the UN General Assembly. Meanwhile, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung faced criticism from Israel after sharing a video involving alleged abuse of a Palestinian child. China has also continued supporting a two-state solution.
Across South and Southeast Asia, several countries have maintained strong support for Palestinian statehood. Sri Lanka called for the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. Pakistan also reaffirmed support for an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also backed full UN membership for Palestine. India has maintained close strategic ties with Israel while supporting a two-state solution. Thailand has also preserved longstanding relations with Israel through economic, educational and agricultural cooperation.
The Pacific region presents a more divided picture. Australia is considering an invitation to join the Gaza Peace Council. Thailand is also reviewing the proposal, while Vietnam has accepted an invitation to participate. New Zealand has described Palestinian recognition as inevitable. However, several Pacific nations continue to support Israel at international forums. Fiji and Papua New Guinea maintain diplomatic ties with Israel and have not recognised Palestine.
Meanwhile, countries including Nauru, Palau and Micronesia have frequently supported Israel at the United Nations. Other Pacific states also maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. The different positions show how the Gaza war has reshaped diplomatic debates worldwide. Israel continues to retain support from several countries. However, criticism from Asian partners and growing recognition of Palestine indicate increasing diplomatic pressure.
