New details released in deadly Canby police confrontation at apartment complex

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Authorities are releasing new details in the investigation into a deadly police shooting in Canby last week. The Clackamas District Attorney's Office says the man who was shot and killed by two Canby officers was 34-year-old Mario Francisco Mendoza Jr., and identified the officers involved in the deadly confrontation as Sgt. Britton Nelson and Sgt. Allen Miller. Canby police previously reported that officers responded to a call of a man trying to force his way into an apartment on South Sequioa Parkway late Thursday night. When they arrived at the scene, a man — identified on Monday as Mendoza — tried to run away on foot, according to the district attorney's office, which added that Mendoza turned toward the officers and fired shots at them as Sgt. Nelson and Sgt. Miller chased after him. Nelson and Miller then shot more than 20 shots in response, striking Mendoza and then rendering emergency aid until Canby Fire officials arrived at the scene and declared Mendoza dead, according to the district attorney's office. Both Nelson and Miller have been placed on paid critical leave. The shooting was captured on body-worn camera, according to the DA; however, the body-worn camera footage will not be released until the grand jury investigation concludes, Clackamas County district attorney's office spokesperson Steve Mayes said in an email. The investigation is ongoing.
