Thousands of tourists are flocking to Swat's scenic destinations, including Kalam, Mahudhand Lake, Malam Jabba and neighbouring valleys, boosting local businesses and creating employment opportunities as winter tourism gains momentum. The growing influx of visitors has increased demand for hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, transport services, horse rides and photography, providing a welcome boost to the livelihoods of local communities. Tourists are particularly attracted to the natural beauty of Kalam, Bahrain, Madyan, Osho Valley, Jazz Banda and Mahudhand Lake, where mist-covered mountains, pine forests, waterfalls and crystal-clear waters offer opportunities for sightseeing and adventure. Local horse riders and photographers are among those benefiting from the increased tourist activity. Horseback rides along mountain trails towards Mahudhand Lake have become a popular attraction, while local photographers are earning through visitors seeking memorable pictures against the scenic mountain landscape. The growing use of social media has also helped promote Swat's tourism potential, as visitors share photographs and videos of the region on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, attracting more tourists. Hotels and guesthouses in Kalam and Malam Jabba are also experiencing strong demand, with several accommodation facilities operating at or near full capacity during peak weekends. Improved road connectivity, particularly following the opening of the Swat Motorway, has made the region more accessible to tourists travelling from major cities, including Peshawar and Islamabad. Besides sightseeing, visitors can enjoy skiing at Malam Jabba, paragliding in Kalam, boating at Mahudhand Lake, hiking, rafting and other adventure activities. Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism and Culture Authority is pursuing several initiatives to promote sustainable tourism, improve accommodation facilities and develop relatively unexplored destinations. Officials said camping pods had been established at Bamborat Kalash Valley in Chitral, Shaheed Sir in Allai, Battagram, Mahban and Malka in Buner to provide affordable accommodation. Around 10 additional tourist sites have also been identified for camping pod facilities, including Jarogo Waterfall, Solatar and Kalam in Swat, Lashkargaz and Broghal in Chitral, Kumrat in Upper Dir, Alpuri in Shangla, Samana Top in Hangu, and Larum Top and Bin Shahi in Lower Dir. The plans also include establishing three new ski resorts in Kaghan, Chitral and Swat to attract international tourists and adventure sports enthusiasts. Four new hill stations are also proposed, including two in Kaghan and one each in Chitral and Abbottabad, to reduce pressure on established tourist destinations. Other initiatives under consideration include tulip cultivation in Naran and Kaghan to create additional income opportunities for local growers, as well as the proposed Battakundi-Lalazar chairlift project. Officials believe these initiatives could help transform tourism from a seasonal activity into a sustainable, year-round economic sector, creating more employment and business opportunities for communities across the province.
