LAHORE: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore has undertaken a major overhaul of its postgraduate dental education framework, revising the curricula of four Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) programmes after nearly two decades. The revision covers MDS Operative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, marking a significant update to postgraduate dental training at one of Pakistan's leading health sciences universities. The decision was taken during the 229th meeting of the Advanced Studies & Research Board (ASRB) at UHS, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nadia Naseem. The university said the restructuring is intended to bring postgraduate dental education in line with contemporary developments in dentistry, modern medical education practices and the evolving requirements of specialist healthcare. For postgraduate dental students and institutions, the revision could have wider implications than a routine curriculum update. The MDS curriculum determines the academic and professional framework through which future dental specialists are trained, assessed and prepared for specialist clinical practice. Four major dental specialties receive revised curricula The revised programmes cover four core areas of specialist dentistry: MDS Operative Dentistry MDS Prosthodontics MDS Orthodontics MDS Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery The university described the exercise as a long-awaited restructuring, with the previous curricula having remained in place for almost 20 years. The revision process was undertaken through Speciality Advisory Committees comprising subject specialists, working in collaboration with the UHS Department of Medical Education. This approach brought together specialty-specific academic expertise and medical education expertise in an effort to ensure that the revised programmes reflect both advances within individual dental disciplines and contemporary approaches to postgraduate education. Curricula aligned with HEC and PMDC requirements An important component of the revision is its alignment with national regulatory and higher-education frameworks. According to UHS, the revised curricula have been aligned with the guidelines of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC), as well as the UHS Level-III MD/MS/MDS Regulations 2024. The alignment is particularly significant for postgraduate dental education because MDS programmes operate within an increasingly structured regulatory environment governing specialist training, academic standards and professional qualifications. The revised curricula had already been examined by the Board of Studies (Dentistry) before being presented to the ASRB. The Board recommended the revised curricula for onward submission to the Academic Council through the Advanced Studies & Research Board, placing the changes within the university's formal academic approval process. Medical education experts oversee curriculum restructuring The ASRB was briefed on the structure and key features of the revised curricula by Prof. Dr. Sarah Ghafoor, Convener of the Board of Studies (Dentistry) and Officiating Head of the Department of Medical Education. Her involvement reflects the emphasis placed on modern medical education principles alongside specialty-specific academic expertise during the curriculum review. Rather than simply updating individual subjects, the review involved a broader examination of the structure of postgraduate dental training, with the aim of bringing specialist education closer to contemporary developments in clinical dentistry and modern approaches to health professions education. What the curriculum overhaul could mean for MDS trainees The significance of the revision lies in the changing nature of dentistry itself. Over the past two decades, dental practice has evolved considerably, with advances in digital dentistry, biomaterials, adhesive and minimally invasive techniques, implant dentistry, contemporary orthodontics, evidence-based clinical practice, diagnostic technologies and interdisciplinary specialist care reshaping the profession. A postgraduate curriculum that reflects current clinical knowledge and modern educational standards is therefore central to preparing dental specialists for contemporary practice. The UHS revision also brings four major specialist disciplines under updated academic frameworks at the same time, potentially providing a more consistent approach to postgraduate dental education across the programmes. For current and prospective MDS candidates, the development is particularly important because curriculum structure influences the knowledge, competencies, clinical exposure and academic expectations associated with specialist training. A long-awaited reset for postgraduate dental education The revision of the four MDS curricula represents a significant academic development for postgraduate dentistry in Pakistan. After nearly 20 years, the overhaul gives UHS an opportunity to bring specialist dental training into closer alignment with current clinical practice, contemporary medical education, national regulatory requirements and the changing needs of specialist healthcare. The next stage will be the formal progression of the revised curricula through the university's academic approval structure. For Pakistan's postgraduate dental education sector, the move will be closely watched, particularly for its potential to influence how future specialists in Operative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery are trained. With the revised frameworks now having passed through the Board of Studies and ASRB process, UHS has effectively set in motion a major update to postgraduate dental training that had been awaiting revision for nearly two decades.
