Koretskyi Demands Immediate Fix for Kyiv's Transport Collapse

Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said he has held an emergency meeting with government officials and Kyiv city authorities regarding instances of transport collapse, which occur as residents frequently get stuck in traffic and at crowded bus stops. He detailed the meeting in a statement on Monday, Sept. 7, noting that he instructed local authorities to ensure residents could arrive home without delay. The disruptions stem from repeated air raid alerts that forced Kyiv's metro to suspend services across parts of the city in recent weeks. Weeks of disruption His remarks came as Kyiv declared a red missile threat warning on Monday evening, despite the supposed three-day ceasefire announced during the visit by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who had traveled to both Moscow and Kyiv in an effort to mediate an end to Russia's war. The new curfew hours will begin at 1 a.m. and last until 5 a.m. 'Accordingly, the working hours of public transport in the capital will be extended by 1 hour,' Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. He noted that 'movement of large-sized transit transport during the curfew' had also been approved as of Sept. 3, in addition to the four new bus routes servicing the train station during curfew hours implemented due to frequent delays caused by Russian attacks. The Kyiv Defense Council had adopted the new decisions as part of a series of earlier changes made by the government, which also sought to introduce a two-tier air raid siren system in response to Russia's changing drone attacks tactics. While the yellow level will warn of drone raids, the red level will signal ballistic missiles or large-scale attacks. Under the yellow level, businesses and the metro are expected to continue operating, while the red level will require mandatory movements into shelters. 'The goal of all these changes is to protect people while also not allowing enemy attacks to paralyze cities,' he continued. Local authorities have been instructed to increase the number of surface public transport vehicles to compensate for service interruptions. Authorities will also conduct weekly reviews of the protective measures to adjust the response as attack patterns evolve, Koretskyi said.
