Dhaka Nattyautshab 2026, a nine-day theatre festival, is under way at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital's Segun Bagicha. Theatre troupe Dhaka Padatik on Tuesday staged 'Trial of Surya Sen' at the Shilpakala Academy's National Theatre Hall as part of the festival. Trial of Surya Sen, the 38th production of Dhaka Padatik, is written by the late Ekushey Padak-winning actor Masum Aziz and directed by Nader Chowdhury. The play revolves around the trial of Surya Sen who led a part of the armed movement in Bengal against the British colonial rule and was hanged after trial for leading the 1930 Chittagong armoury raid. The festival has also been adorned with live performance of dance, songs and recitations on the academy premises. Bashori Repertory Theatre is scheduled to stage its production 'Alea' today at the same venue. Dhaka South City Corporation organised the festival as part of its year-long project 'Hridoye Dhaka 416' to celebrate 416 years of the city's heritage. The festival is featuring nine plays, including Aranyak Natyadal's 'Company', Theatre Art Unit's 'Amina Sundori', Tirandaj Repertory's 'Konthonalite Surja' and Dristipat Natyadal's 'Se Ek Swapner Rat'. Beginning with Prachyanat's production titled 'Kinu Kaharer Thyatar' on September 6, the festival will end with Bangladesh Theatre's production 'Sea Morog' on September 14.
