Kim Yong-beom: "U.S. big tech investment is highly meaningful… We'll create a free ‘AI for All'"

Yonhap News Screenshot of the YouTube video of 'CBS Park Sung-tae's News Show' Presidential Policy Chief Kim Yong-beom said the investments in Korea announced in San Francisco by global big tech companies are "contracts of considerable significance," explaining that "most of the US$950 billion involves Samsung Electronics and SK manufacturing and supplying semiconductors."He also mentioned attracting investment in AI data centers and added that the government would create a "AI for All" that every citizen can use easily and without cost burdens.Accompanying President Lee Jae-myung on his tour of Latin America, Kim made these remarks on CBS Radio's "Park Sung-tae's News Show" on the morning of the 27th regarding the US$950 billion-scale semiconductor agreements signed between Korean companies and U.S. big tech firms during President Lee's visit to San Francisco.Kim said, "The total is US$950 billion, with Samsung Electronics signing a five-year, US$200 billion deal with Broadcom, and SK signing a long-term semiconductor supply contract worth US$750 billion with NVIDIA and others. The details are even more meaningful," adding, "Among the US$200 billion worth of agreements between Samsung Electronics and Broadcom, there are memory products, but it also includes a so-called 'foundry' contract under which Samsung manufactures AI chips designed by Broadcom."He went on to say, "SK, in return for producing HBM (high-bandwidth memory) for NVIDIA, has secured priority allocation of the 'Vera Rubin' system, NVIDIA's top-tier GPU system," explaining, "It's a product for which the whole world is lining up, and Korea has effectively been placed at the very front of the line." He added that most of the US$950 billion consists of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix manufacturing and supplying semiconductors.Regarding investment to build AIDCs (AI data centers) in Korea, he said, "This time we secured firm commitments totaling 5 gigawatts, which corresponds to about two million GPUs," and explained, "NVIDIA will provide 2 gigawatts; Anthropic, together with SK Telecom, will provide 1 gigawatt; Naver will receive an equity investment (US$1 billion) from NVIDIA; and Brookfield will invest about US$9 billion, so a US$10 billion global AI factory will be built in Korea."Kim also elaborated on the "AI for All" initiative that President Lee has long emphasized and that was referenced in the "San Francisco Declaration."According to Kim, AI for All is a project to enable all citizens to use AI easily and without burden, and under the leadership of the Ministry of Science and ICT, a pilot service will launch in September, with full service beginning in December. Any citizen will be able to use it without cost burdens or usage limits.Like widely used AI models today, it will be able not only to write text or answer questions but, with built-in "AI agents," also handle tasks such as booking train tickets or issuing resident registration certificates. In other words, public services will be directly linked to AI. Kim stressed, "Starting next year, we aim to realize a society in which every citizen in our country has their own AI agent."
