The arts in Wexford will once again be strongly represented at an international festival taking place in Wales at the end of the month. For the sixth year in a row, Culture Ireland will support an ongoing project which has seen the work of over 15 artists exhibited at the West Wales Arts Centre in Fishguard. Another aspect of the project is supporting Wexford jazz groups at the Aberjazz Festival, which runs from August 27-31. Wexford drummer and multiple recording artiste, Kevin Lawlor, is the headline act at Peppers club on August 28 and he will be joined by some of Ireland's finest jazz musicians: Chris Colloton (guitar); Scott Flanigan (keyboards) and Cillian Byrne (bass). Kevin headlined the recent Jazz at Johnstown Festival and is also the Director of Jazz and drum tutor at the Co. Wexford School of Music. His album, The Island, is his fifth as bandleader and composer. Brid Colloton's work at the West Wales Arts Centre is supported by Culture Ireland. This year's chosen visual artist in a show curated by Myles Pepper is Brid Colloton who uses monotype printmaking. Water-soluble mediums are applied to prepared surfaces before being transferred to hot-pressed watercolour paper. These images seek further exploration using different forms of printmaking including monotype, drypoint etching, collograph and carborundum. Project coordinator Tom Mooney praised Culture Ireland for sponsoring a project which continues to develop cultural ties between Wexford and Pembrokeshire.
