Man accused of Spring Day stabbing abandons bail application

Friends of Tshepang Nyathi mourn his death after he was stabbed to death by a 53-year-old man amid the Spring Day celebrations in Gauteng. A 53-year-old Gauteng man accused of fatally stabbing a man during Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe has abandoned his bail application at the Cullinan Magistrate's Court yesterday. The man is accused of killing 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi on September 1, 2026, in Refilwe Extension 3. On the day of the incident, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said a group of young people had gathered to celebrate Spring Day by pouring water on one another and on passersby. "While the accused was walking past, it is alleged that the group attempted to pour water on him. He allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the deceased. The deceased was taken to a local clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries," she said. The accused was arrested later that same day at Ekangala Hospital, where he had sought medical treatment after being apprehended and assaulted by members of the community following the alleged stabbing. The matter was postponed to October 27, 2026, for further police investigations. The NPA has not disclosed the man's identity, however, according to reports, the man is Nyathi's neighbour.
