DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – The Beautify Decatur Coalition has installed two new signs on the Staley Viaduct to celebrate Decatur's industrial heritage. The coalition said solar lighting will be added in the future. Organizers said the signs are intended to improve the industrial area and highlight the role industry has played in the community. The project is part of the coalition's ongoing work along the 22nd Street corridor. Previous improvements include the Corn Fence, removal of the former Firestone fence, cleanup of scrub trees and weeds, and the planting of 30 trees. The coalition also installed a kinetic sculpture at the Mervis property and promoted the Caterpillar sculpture at the north end of 22nd Street. It has also held litter cleanups in the area, often with volunteers from ADM.
