Following the Eruption of Anak Krakatau, Police Distributes Mask to Public in Bogor Indonesian National Police

This measure was taken to anticipate exposure to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, which was observed reaching Bogor Regency, West Java, on September 6, 2026. Bogor Sub-regional Police Chief, Superintendent Wikha Ardilestanto, stated in Cibinong on Sunday (9/6/2026) that the mask distribution was targeting people engaged in outdoor activities. "We have instructed all personnel in the field not only to distribute masks but also to provide direct education to the public about the dangers of volcanic ash," said Wikha. The primary target group for this mask distribution is motorcyclists and pedestrians in open spaces who are potentially directly exposed to the ash. According to Wikha, wearing masks is crucial because the volcanic ash particles are harmful for health. If inhaled, the ash has the potential to irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Ash exposure can also worsen the conditions of people with respiratory disorders, such as asthma and bronchitis. Therefore, the police are urging vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with respiratory problems, to limit outdoor activities while there is still potential exposure to volcanic ash. In addition to distributing masks, police personnel are providing education on several preventative measures, including reducing outdoor activities and closing doors, windows, and vents to minimize ash ingress. People who have been outside are also reminded to wash their hands, face, and exposed body parts with soap and running water and change their clothes. When cleaning the neighborhood, public are asked to wet the ash piles before sweeping them to prevent particles from re-emerging and being inhaled.
