Matt Suhey, former Bears fullback and Super Bowl champion, dies at 68

CHICAGO (WGN) — Longtime Chicago Bears fullback Matt Suhey, a member of the team's legendary 1985 Super Bowl championship team, has died, sources tell WGN-TV. He was 68. After being drafted out of Penn State, Suhey played for the Bears from 1980 until 1989 and appeared in 140 career games. Known for his blocking, he often helped clear the way for good friend and teammate Walter Payton. He scored the first touchdown of Super Bowl XX, running for an 11-yard run in the first quarter as the Bears went on to defeat the New England Patriots. Suhey remained close with the Payton family long after his football career ended. According to the Chicago Tribune, Suhey died in his sleep Saturday night. Submit Correction Δ
