Massena Rod and Gun Club hosting turkey shoot Sept. 12

MASSENA -- A turkey shoot is planned for Sept. 12 at the Massena Rod and Gun Club but it may not be what you're imagining. Rod and Gun Club officials say the event will feature both an adult division and youth division for the marksmanship competition, which will feature multiple prizes. Officials said the event, which is believed to be the first of its kind to be hosted by the club, is a great opportunity for families to take part in a fun event and test their skills. In the youth division, kids 13 and under will use .22 caliber rifles and shoot 50 yards with open sights at a target. The closest shot to the "X" ring of the target wins each round. Officials stressed the rifles used must be .22 short or long rifle only. Ear and eye protection is also mandatory and kids must be accompanied by an adult. Youth entry is free and the winner will receive a lifetime sportsman license. Other prizes will include a kayak and fishing gear as well, officials said. In the adult division, 12 gauge and 20 gauge shotguns will be used and targets will be placed at 80 feet. Officials said the only shot size allowed will be 7 1/2 oz target loads and barrels are not to exceed 36". The closest shooter to the "X" wins, much the same as the youth division, officials said. Those who plan to participate must check-in at the clubhouse before heading to the range. Cost for adults is $5 per round, which is 25 rounds. The event will also feature food on site, as well as a 50/50 and raffles for the day. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rod and Gun Club, located at 155 Patterson Road, Massena.
