This bridge facilitates the movement of cargo and passengers across the Tumen River. Pyongyang state media reported that the bridge will support "personnel exchanges, tourism, and trade." However, Ukrainian investigative group Truth Hounds claims the bridge aims to create a covert military logistics corridor for Russia in its war against Ukraine. This development follows strengthened ties between Russia and North Korea since the Ukraine conflict began. Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have pledged mutual support against any aggression. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin called the bridge a "new symbol of friendship." North Korea's Prime Minister Pak Thae Song referred to it as a "historical event." According to Russian state news TASS, up to 300 vehicles and 2,323 people can cross daily. Satellite imagery from May showed the kilometer-long bridge along with new access roads, a border checkpoint, and parking facilities. Previously, there were air links and a rail connection between the two countries. The only road link was a temporary solution using wooden planks on a rail bridge for cars. The Russian government stated that initially, the bridge would transport cargo. Passenger traffic is expected to begin later this year. Mishustin noted that this development would boost trade, economic cooperation, scientific collaboration, technological exchange, and cultural ties. He described Moscow-Pyongyang relations as being "at an unprecedented high level" during his video appearance at the opening ceremony. One immediate effect may be an increase in weapon exports to Russia. South Korea's spy agency estimates that North Korea has already sent $7 to $14 billion worth of military supplies via ships. Approximately 11,000 North Korean troops are reportedly fighting alongside Russians in Ukraine. Truth Hounds indicated that under a strategic partnership treaty set for 2024, this bridge could facilitate transporting North Korean military personnel directly into Russia. It would also allow Russian technology and resources to flow into North Korea. Construction began in 2025 after an agreement during Putin's visit to North Korea in 2024. This trip marked his first visit in 24 years and led to the partnership treaty. The construction took 495 days due to delays. Since being allowed entry in 2024, Russian tourists have begun visiting North Korea. They are hosted mainly in Pyongyang and Wonsan-Kalma beach resorts while visitors from other countries remain blocked. The road is also anticipated to transport North Korean laborers into Russia. An estimated 10,000 North Koreans work on construction sites and logging camps there according to South Korean estimates. Many enter under student visas despite UN bans on using North Korean labor. Victor Cha from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) remarked that construction speed reflects increased trade activity between both nations. He attributed this surge largely to North Korea supplying troops, weapons, munitions, and laborers for Putin's war efforts in Ukraine.
