CM Secretariat To Review South-West Nagpur Works After July Deluge

Nagpur: In a first such multi-departmental review since the 2024 Assembly elections, the Chief Minister's Secretariat has convened a meeting on Tuesday to take stock of development and infrastructure works being executed in South-West Nagpur, the Assembly constituency represented by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis . The meeting, scheduled at 4pm on September 8 at Hyderabad House, assumes significance in the wake of the July 28 deluge that left several parts of the constituency waterlogged. The Somalwar School area in Khamla was among the worst affected, with students reportedly having to be rescued from the waterlogged campus. The CM Secretariat has directed officials of various departments to attend the meeting with details of works being executed by them, indicating an effort to bring multiple agencies involved in infrastructure development in the constituency onto a common platform. Officials from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's Public Works Department, state Public Works Department's World Bank division, NMC's DPDC cell and Nagpur Improvement Trust are expected to attend. The PWD's World Bank division is executing sewerage-line works and a couple of cement-concrete roads in the constituency. Meanwhile, NMC's DPDC cell is executing 29 works worth around Rs60 crore. These include 18 cement-concrete roads, four tar-road renovation works, construction of a samaj bhavan and yoga shed, besides a retaining wall along a nullah. NIT is also executing an overflow drain line for Sonegaon lake, a project that assumes significance amid concerns over waterlogging and drainage capacity in the area. The July flooding had particularly brought stormwater drainage works in the Pratap Nagar-Khamla belt under scrutiny. NMC Standing Committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare had raised the issue with Fadnavis, alleging faulty planning and execution of stormwater drain works near Somalwar School by the PWD's World Bank division. An inspection had subsequently flagged an apparent level mismatch between a proposed 2-metre stormwater pipeline and an existing 1.2-metre pipeline. The issue also reached the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, which questioned NMC, NIT and PWD over the waterlogging near Somalwar School and stressed that citizens and schoolchildren should not suffer because of a lack of coordination between government agencies. The CM Secretariat's review is expected to focus on the progress of ongoing works, inter-departmental coordination, technical issues and timelines for completion. With several agencies simultaneously undertaking projects in South-West Nagpur, the meeting could also seek to address overlaps and deficiencies that may contribute to flooding and other infrastructure-related problems during heavy rainfall.
