Canada's countertariffs to take effect as Trump targets Bombardier

Canada has confirmed that retaliatory tariffs on US imports will take effect at 12:01 am (0401 GMT) on Tuesday as the trade dispute between the two countries escalates. The move comes as US President Donald Trump stepped up pressure on Canada, calling for Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier to be shut out of the US market unless it moves production to the United States. Canada's Finance Ministry confirmed the countermeasures in response to an enquiry from dpa. Tariffs of up to 50% will apply to US imports worth C$27.6 billion ($20 billion), including steel and aluminium products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper products, and electronics. The move follows the breakdown of trade talks between Washington and Ottawa. In August, the Trump administration imposed tariffs of up to 50% on around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including ice hockey sticks, furniture, honey and wine, prompting Canada to announce retaliatory measures. Trump targets Bombardier Trump took aim at Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier on Monday, saying its planes should no longer be sold in the United States. Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said that if Bombardier wanted access to US buyers, it should manufacture its aircraft in the US. Trump has previously threatened tariffs on Canadian aircraft imports. Earlier this year, he criticized Canada's treatment of US business jet manufacturer Gulfstream, a Bombardier rival, claiming Canadian authorities had refused to approve several of the company's aircraft models. Trump renewed his accusations of unfair treatment and urged Americans to buy domestic products. "BUY AMERICAN. FLY ON AMERICAN AIRLINERS. ENJOY AMERICAN LIQUOR AND BEVERAGES. SAIL ON LAKE AMERICA.
