Rs. 189 Million Govt Girls' College in Punjab Still Incomplete

A government girls' college in Mailsi remains incomplete and non-functional nearly four years after its approval, despite Rs. 181 million having already been spent on the project. The Government Associate College for Girls, Dukota, near Chak 145-WB, was approved on July 27, 2021, at an estimated cost of Rs. 189.08 million. Its foundation stone was laid on September 25, 2022. According to available government development records, Rs. 181.549 million had been spent on the project by June 2025, representing nearly 96% of its approved cost. However, the college has yet to become fully operational for academic activities. The prolonged delay has also affected the condition of the partially completed building. Local residents said some windowpanes have started breaking due to a lack of maintenance. A transformer installed to provide electricity to the college was also allegedly stolen some time ago. The incident has raised concerns over the protection of government property and could result in additional expenditure if a replacement is required before the college becomes operational. They said long travel distances, transportation costs and social constraints associated with daily commuting often make it difficult for families to support their daughters' education. Residents called for the project to be completed and made operational so students in Dukota and adjoining rural areas can access higher education closer to home.
