Laois community safety group pays tribute to late Chair Liam O'Neill

As the Laois Local Community Safety Partnership(LCSP) held their first public meeting on Tuesday, September 8, tributes were paid to its late Chairperson Liam O'Neill. The former GAA President and Laois man, Liam O'Neill, passed away on August 4. The Gaelgóir and GAA leader was appointed the Chairperson of the LCSP when it was established in late 2025. This is a new forum where communities in Laois can voice their concerns around local safety issues. The LCSP held their first public meeting at Laois County Council on Tuesday, September 8. This was also the first meeting since the passing of Liam. The meeting began with a moment of silence and tributes to the former Chairperson, led by the Vice Chairperson and Portlaoise Councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley. Read More Cllr Dwane Stanley said: 'Liam is someone I had the privilege of knowing through various different committees, including the LCSP, over the past number of years. He was a huge contributor to education, the Irish language and sport through the GAA. He will be sadly missed.' A number of local councillors paid tribute to Liam as well as Laois TDs Brian Stanley and Willie Aird. Committee members Kiernan Brosnan and Superintendent Brian Farrell also paid their respects to their late colleague. The Laois County Council Chief Executive, Michael Rainey, also spoke about the former Chairperson, saying: 'Liam's passing has been a huge loss to the county. His passion for public service and community development, I don't think anyone could match up in terms of the amount of organisations he played a really significant role in over the course of his life. 'I was delighted to see he was coming in as Chair of the LCSP. My thoughts are with his family at this time, may he rest in peace.'
