UB proposes flock camera pilot program for campuses

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The University at Buffalo has introduced a proposal to install flock cameras on its campuses. According to the university's website, 20 flock cameras would be installed at entrances and exits on the North and South campuses as part of a 60-day pilot program. 'The safety and security of UB's campuses — and the privacy of our campus communities — are always among the university's highest priorities,' the website says. 'As part of an effort to continually assess and enhance the security and safety of the university campus community, UB is evaluating a pilot program that would install automated license plate readers (LPRs) at campus entrances and exits to assist University Police in solving criminal investigations.' Additionally, the university says it is planning to install more security cameras and replace outdated ones in an effort to expand coverage in public spaces, as well as assess technology solutions to secure access to building entrances. 'These efforts together will be very effective in helping to deter crime on campus and will provide UPD investigators with valuable evidence to solve crimes affecting members of the UB campus community,' the website says.
