Artisan jewelry brand King Baby will make its Louisiana debut September 12 with the opening of a boutique at Canal Place in downtown New Orleans. The store will be King Baby's first location in Louisiana and the Gulf South, according to Canal Place. The brand is known for handcrafted jewelry that incorporates rock 'n' roll influences and will offer designs created specifically for the New Orleans market. The boutique will be located on the second level of Canal Place, above Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. The circular store features custom-built cabinetry designed to complement the brand's aesthetic. King Baby founder and designer Mitchell Binder grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, and has longstanding family ties to the New Orleans area. According to the company, Binder frequently visited relatives in the region, including family members who operated a neighborhood deli beginning in 1961. Those connections influenced several pieces developed for the New Orleans store, including fleur-de-lis and other Southern-inspired designs. 'Coming to New Orleans feels like a true homecoming for our family roots, given my dad's history traveling back and forth between Jackson and the New Orleans area for decades,' King Baby Brand Director Ben Binder said. 'The city shares our love for soul, history and a little bit of edge. We've designed exclusive pieces specifically for this market, and we couldn't be more excited to open our doors at Canal Place for the chosen few who appreciate true artisan work.' King Baby will mark the opening with a public celebration from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12. The event will include live music from New Orleans blues group the Wolfe Johns Band, champagne and food from Brasa South American Steakhouse. The event is free and open to the public. Canal Place, located near the French Quarter, is a luxury shopping center that includes designer retailers, restaurants and a movie theater and is connected to The Westin New Orleans. Canal Place is owned by O'Connor Capital Partners, a New York-based real estate investment, management and development firm. The company says it has acquired or developed more than $30 billion in properties since its founding in 1983, including more than 55 million square feet of retail space and more than 30,000 residential units.
