Matthew Lawrence recalls how Sally Field became a mother figure while filming 'Mrs. Doubtfire' with Robin Williams Matthew Lawrence has reflected on his experience filming Mrs. Doubtfire, revealing how co-star Sally Field became a mother figure to him while they worked on the 1993 comedy. Lawrence, who played Chris Hillard, the son of Field's Miranda Hillard and Robin Williams' Daniel Hillard, said the cast developed a close bond during production. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actor recalled how the group built a family-like atmosphere on set. 'We really became a family unit on that set,' Lawrence said, adding that the cast spent time getting to know one another even before rehearsals began. Field, who played the mother of three children in the film, was particularly caring towards Lawrence, who was just 12 years old during filming. 'She was so caring, so kind. I don't know how anybody could have anything bad to say about the lady,' he said, praising the Oscar-winning actress for her kindness throughout the experience. Lawrence also credited Field, Williams and Pierce Brosnan, who played Miranda's boyfriend, for striking the right balance between treating him as a young actor and allowing him to feel included. According to Lawrence, the three stars neither talked down to him because of his age nor exposed him unnecessarily to the adult world. He described their approach as a wonderful experience and one of the most memorable opportunities of his career. Released in 1993, Mrs. Doubtfire follows Daniel Hillard, played by Williams, who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny to spend time with his children after separating from Miranda. Lawrence starred alongside Lisa Jakub and Mara Wilson as the couple's three children. More than three decades after the film's release, Lawrence said he still occasionally encounters Field and continues to find her just as warm and welcoming. Earlier this year, Lawrence also published The Lawrence Brothers Detective Agency, a graphic novel created with his real-life brothers that paid tribute to Field and Williams. His latest recollections offer a glimpse into the lasting relationships formed behind the scenes of the beloved comedy.
