Monticello man charged with murder after argument about a cat ended in a shooting

MONTICELLO, Minn. — A Monticello man is facing murder charges after his sister's boyfriend was found Thursday with a fatal gunshot wound. Prosecutors say a woman called 911 after returning to her home in Monticello around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday to find her boyfriend, Daniel Lawrence Ferdelman, unresponsive in bed. Ferdelman, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene. More in Crime The woman told law enforcement that her boyfriend called her around 12:15 a.m., saying he got into a physical altercation with her brother, Steven Ralph Stahlberg. The argument allegedly began because of an issue with a cat. Prosecutors said that a neighbor's security cameras caught Stahlberg driving away from the home around 1:18 a.m. Prosecutors said a shotgun and shells were found in his pickup truck. When officers arrived at the home six hours later, they found Ferdelman in bed with a shotgun wound to the chest. The medical examiner confirmed the gunshot wound was the cause of death. Stahlberg is now facing two charges of second-degree murder. He will appear in court Tuesday for a bail hearing.
