Punjab's first wildlife survey records thousands of animals and birds

LAHORE - Preliminary results of Punjab's first comprehensive provincial survey of wildlife and flora have recorded thousands of animals and birds across the province, providing baseline data on their population, distribution and habitats. The survey recorded 5,128 Punjab urials, 1,276 chinkara deer, 540 Indus River dolphins, 160 nilgai, 138 para deer and 93 blackbucks. Among birds, officials recorded 92,636 grey partridges, 40,526 black partridges, 6,052 chakors and 1,821 tabby birds, along with 345 vultures and 49 kalij pheasants. The survey also documented 1,070 Indian gazelles (chinkara), 720 soft-shelled turtles, 85 snakes, 78 porcupines and 22 pythons, besides recording various plant species. The Rs530 million survey is being conducted in collaboration with IUCN Pakistan and the Punjab Wildlife Department. It was formally launched in Lahore in April 2025 to scientifically assess wildlife populations, geographical distribution and habitats across the province. Officials said the findings would form the basis for preparing a Red Data Book, while preparations for the second phase of the survey are also underway to verify and improve the data. The first-ever Red Data Book of Pakistan is expected to be completed by 2028, according to the authorities. Tags:
