Days of our Lives Recap September 8: Rita Betrays EJ

Gwen stressed that she was only familiar with the work at the hospital. Leo accused Gwen of being scared. Gwen told Leo that she had decided to accept EJ as a silent partner rather than make him more of an enemy. Leo warned Gwen that her plan would backfire. Gwen argued that she needed the hospital to remain respectable. Concerned, Leo warned Gwen that it was too big a risk to her life. Leo reminded Gwen that family and friends were more important than money. 'I consider you both,' Leo said. Leo pleaded with Gwen to avoid EJ rather than risk her life in a new scheme with him. As Gwen assured Leo that she did not plan to die in the near future, Cat stopped at the table. Leo's phone beeped, and he rushed off to a meeting. Cat asked Gwen why Leo was concerned about her dying. Gwen lied and said she had been considering doing a 5K run. When Gwen encouraged Cat to join her for a drink, Cat hesitated, but she noted it was probably okay since her boss was in Rome to visit Sydney. Gwen grumbled that EJ was intentionally dragging his feet on the sale of the hospital. Gwen asked Cat if she planned to stay on at the hospital, but Cat said she was not sure. Gabi asked Kate to get Ari's internship at DiMera canceled. Kate agreed that it was a good idea to remove Ari from the company. Kate asked Gabi to keep an eye on Philip in Europe, because she was concerned that he would chase an impulse and get himself into trouble. Gabi promised to keep a watchful eye on Philip. As Gabi headed out, Leo arrived for his meeting with Kate. Kate informed Leo that she was the new metro editor and his boss at the paper. Kate listed Leo's new rules and duties, including a directive for Leo to start a podcast. Gabi overheard Cat and Gwen talking about EJ as she passed by, and she joined the women at their table. Cat insisted that she could hold her own against EJ, but Gabi reminded her that both she and Gwen had been formidable opponents who had been hurt by EJ. After Gwen and Gabi recounted EJ's revenge schemes against them, Gabi mentioned the counterfeit handbags. A tipsy Gwen whispered that Leo believed that the counterfeit operation was part of a wider criminal empire. Cat asked Gabi if she had any proof. Gabi admitted that they did not have anything concrete. Leo returned from his meeting with Kate and gulped down the drink he had left behind. After a brief look around the table, Leo asked what the women had been gossiping about. Gwen said they had been discussing EJ. Gabi told Cat that she had reconsidered, and she believed Cat should stay at her job with EJ. Leo smirked at Cat, and he noted that she was very qualified to help them bring down EJ. Chad suggested they take a break from their investigation to enjoy the romantic ambience. Belle showed Chad the fountain that John and Marlena had visited after they had married in Rome. Chad pulled out a coin, and he said he wished that their investigation would bring peace to Belle's family. Belle said she hoped the outcome would not adversely affect Chad's family. The lovers threw Chad's coin into the fountain together. EJ called Sydney from his hotel in Rome, but she did not answer her phone. Cat called, so EJ sighed with annoyance. EJ explained that his sudden trip to Italy was because he had wanted to see Sydney. EJ told Cat he did not know when he would return home. Cat pushed EJ to talk to her about his concerns over her confession. EJ repeated that he did not hold Cat's past with the ISA against her, and that he was in Italy to see his daughter. After EJ left the hotel, he ran into Chad and Belle at a cafe. EJ explained that he had been unable to reach Sydney, so he had decided to sightsee. Belle asked about Sami, but EJ said he had no plans to visit his ex. EJ joked about how it was fun to spar with Sami at first, but it only led to madness. 'Speaking of past relationships that ended badly, how much of Cat Greene's life do you know about Chad?' EJ asked. Chad refused to discuss Cat. Unfazed, EJ asked Chad if Cat had ever revealed that she was a former ISA agent. Chad and Belle were surprised by the revelation. Confused, Chad asked why Cat had decided to tell EJ so unexpectedly. EJ explained that Cat had told him that she did not want to have secrets between them and that Cat had quit her desk job with the ISA after her accident. Chad argued that Shane would not have let a former ISA agent pose as Abigail when it hurt so many of Shane's family members. EJ admitted that Chad had made a good point. Sydney called, and EJ excitedly left the table to talk to his daughter. Sydney told EJ that she was traveling outside of Italy. EJ told Chad and Belle that he had wanted to surprise Sydney and he had not called ahead, but Belle was suspicious of EJ's motives for the journey. Chad agreed. EJ denied that he had gone to Italy to spy on Chad and Belle. When EJ told Chad to be careful, Chad stepped closer to EJ and growled at him to return to Salem. Chad and Belle returned to their hotel and made love for the first time. As EJ stood in the cafe, he rubbed the finger where he normally wore Stefano's ring. EJ called Rita to ask about it, but she lied and said she had not been able to find it. In a study with a picture of Stefano, a chess board, and a glass of Strega, a mystery man in a suit opened a package. Inside the envelope was Stefano's ring. The man put the ring on.
