No More Corruption? Punjab Police Officers to Be Equipped With Body Cameras

Punjab has introduced body-worn cameras for police personnel as part of a broader effort to strengthen accountability, improve public safety, and modernise policing across the province. The initiative was initially launched in Lahore on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and covers personnel from the Punjab Police, Highway Patrol, Dolphin Force, and traffic wardens. The devices are equipped with several features, including audio and video recording, facial recognition, number-plate reading, live monitoring, threat alerts, push-to-talk communication, and an SOS function. The cameras will also be connected with Safe City systems operating across 43 cities, allowing recorded and monitored information to support police operations and oversight. At the end of each shift, officers are required to return the devices to designated docking stations, where the recorded data will be securely transferred and stored. The move is aimed at increasing transparency in police interactions, strengthening operational monitoring, and using technology to support more accountable and responsive law enforcement.
