Theatre Workshop of Owensboro ‘Steel Magnolias' Opens This Weekend

Most everyone has a movie or two or three that they can quote from beginning to end. For me, one of those is 'Steel Magnolias.' I watched that movie for the first time in college. Sitting in my friends' dorm room while they did their best Truvy and Shelby impressions. Over the years, it joined the ranks of my comfort movies. You know those nostalgic films you put on the TV while you're doing laundry or when you're home sick? This story is also near and dear because I was in the theatrical version about 13 years ago at Theatre Workshop of Owensboro as the character Annelle. I will always remember that experience for several reasons. Kristin Whitney, who played Truvy on stage, has become my best friend in real life. I also found out I was pregnant with my son while rehearsing for the show. The other ladies in the cast learned the news before almost everyone else in my life. My crackers and ginger ale gave it away. I had to warn them just in case my "morning" sickness caused me to have to run off mid-scene. This year marks another special season at Theatre Workshop of Owensboro. They are bringing back crowd favorites from over the years, and it would not be complete without the ladies of Chinquapin Parish, of course! For the past month, a group of fabulous actors led by a fabulous directing team has been giving this classic new life. Of course, this has also been accompanied by a very sad coincidence, as we just so happened to lose our beloved Dolly Parton at the end of August. However, this weekend, "Steel Magnolias" opens to honor her memory, and as I said, this cast is going to blow you away. As her character Truvy says, "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion." I've worked with several of them before, and the other women I've heard amazing things about, so I am excited to see the show myself. Here's who is portraying your favorite gals.
