RAWALPINDI – Pakistan takes another step towards strengthening its air combat capabilities after successfully testing its first indigenously developed Fa'az air-to-air missile, adding another milestone to country's growing defence technology programme. The successful flight test signals Pakistan's efforts to develop advanced aerial weapons at home, potentially reducing dependence on foreign suppliers while expanding the operational capabilities of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). Bakced with an advanced terminal guidance system, Fa'az missile is designed to engage hostile aircraft at extended distances. Its development is expected to give PAF pilots greater flexibility during air combat operations and strengthen their ability to counter aerial threats. The test was witnessed by senior military officials, prominent scientists and engineers who contributed to the missile's development. The achievement also highlights the growing role of Pakistan's domestic defence industry in designing and producing sophisticated military systems. After successful launch, President, Prime Minister, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, alongside the services chiefs, congratulated the scientists and engineers behind the project. The top leadership praised their technical expertise and dedication, describing their contribution as an important step towards strengthening national defence capabilities. Fa'az test comes amid Pakistan's continued focus on modernising its military hardware, improving indigenous weapons production and developing technologies that can enhance the country's aerial deterrence. However, the missile's exact operational range, speed, platform compatibility and detailed technical specifications have not yet been publicly disclosed in the announcement. Pakistan's Other Air-to-Air Missiles and Their Ranges Missile Approx. range PL-15E 145 km PL-12 / SD-10A 70–100 km AIM-120C-5 AMRAAM Around 74 km PL-11 Around 75 km PL-10E 20–30 km PL-9C Around 22 km PL-5EII 16–18 km AIM-9 Sidewinder Variant-dependent These are indicative published figures, not guaranteed engagement distances. Actual performance depends on altitude, launch speed, target direction, manoeuvrability and other operational conditions. PL-15E is among Pakistan's most capable publicly known air-to-air weapons. Its integration with the JF-17 Block III and J-10CE has been documented. The Chinese domestic PL-15 is reported to have a longer range, with some estimates reaching 300 km, but that figure should not be attributed to Pakistan's export variant.
