Dunnett's second century not enough to hold the line for Henley as season ends

Finishing sixth in the 2026 Home Counties Premier League table was probably a fair outcome for a season that started poorly for Henley, gathered momentum through the month of August with a four-match winning run, but ultimately finished with a six-wicket defeat at home to Oxford Downs on Saturday. After winning the toss and opting to bat on a slightly dewy September morning, Henley made a poor start losing Berkshire opener Johnny Connell for a duck to the second ball of the match, then also quickly losing George Politis to a low catch at midwicket to leave them on 19-2. As the middle order struggled on a surface that made scoring seem difficult, Henley were further reduced to 75-5, with only Charlie Dunnett finding any real rhythm. Captain Tom Nugent joined Dunnett and the pair added a useful 69 runs together with Nugent himself falling just two runs below his personal best score in the league for a well-made 34. Dunnett marshalled the tail expertly to get to his second league hundred of the season, including 12 fours and two sixes, finally falling for 105 off 132 balls. Tom Stewart was joined at the crease by debutant George Piercy and their stands of nine and eight not out left Henley's innings at 212-9 off their 50 overs. Overseas left arm spinner Louis Delport was the pick of the Oxford Downs bowlers finishing with 3-37. Henley's bowling innings got off to a dream start with Nugent removing Freddie Smith, the Oxford Downs captain and leading run-scorer this season, for a duck in the first over when Dunnett held on to a firm hit at extra cover. At the other end, Bjorn Mordt's gentle arm balls, a couple of which reached nearly 50mph, were a perfect foil for Nugent who struck again with the score on 36 dismissing Will Watts for 21. Oxford Downs reached 50 in the ninth over and just as Henley were trying to gain some control in the next over, one of the canine spectators tried to beat Connor Lamsdale in a one-on-one race to a ball at deep mid-on, but the fielder kept his nerve and limited it to two runs. With such a small total to defend, Henley were leaking runs too quickly, with a series of short balls being hit to the boundary before Tom Stewart picked up the wicket of George Sandbach caught at mid-off, reducing the visitors to 79-3 off 16 overs. Lamsdale slowed the flow of runs, conceding only twenty-three runs from his nine overs, but the other Henley bowlers were rather put to the sword, keeping club stalwart Ronnie Brock very busy in the scorebox. Fortunately, the club's sturdy poplar trees ensured that the blooming late summer produce of the neighbouring allotments were left ready for the table as Luke Maslan and Tristan Rossouw pounced on some indifferent bowling. Maslan was in particularly sparkling form but was denied his century when Samm Daniel dismissed him for 98 with the score on 183-4, but by then the damage had been done and Rossouw and Henry Welch knocked the remaining runs off comfortably with 18 overs to spare. It was a disappointing end to the season for Henley who had shown much improved form after a difficult start. While 2026 will not be remembered as a vintage year Henley Cricket Club, the players have shown resilience under pressure setting the stage for the 2027 campaign.
