Sean McDermott Reveals the One Trait Everyone at Rams Camp Says Makes Sean McVay Special

Sean McDermott spent part of his year away from coaching doing something most NFL head coaches rarely get to do: watch another team from the outside. When he visited the Los Angeles Rams camp, he was not looking for some secret offensive concept or defensive wrinkle but wanted to see what makes Sean McVay tick. The answer was surprisingly simple. McDermott asked everyone he encountered around the building what separated McVay from other coaches. Players, coaches and staff members all landed on the same word: authenticity. Sean McDermott And Sean McVay Share A Leadership Trait That Stood Out McDermott did not just stop by the Rams to catch a few of their practices. The former Buffalo Bills head coach wanted a close-up look at how McVay runs his operation, connects with players and carries himself around the building. So McDermott asked a simple question to virtually everyone he crossed paths with: What makes McVay special? The answer never changed. "I've always heard how good of a leader Sean is and how well he connects with his team, both old and young. So I wanted to get a front-row seat and watch him in training camp. Watch him move and how he operated in that space. I asked every player that I came across or every staff member… Whether it was a coach, equipment manager, trainer, personnel department… I said, 'What makes Sean special?' And every person, they said, 'His authenticity.' That stood out to me. …." That apparently stuck with McDermott. He even walked to the other side of the practice field at one point so he could watch McVay without being part of the interaction. He wanted to see how the Rams coach operated when he wasn't directly explaining anything to a visitor. McDermott had already heard plenty about McVay's ability to connect with players. Seeing it in person was different. He watched McVay move around practice, communicate with his staff, and interact with players of different ages and experience levels. What stood out was not some complicated leadership formula but how naturally McVay seemed to be himself. That hits a little differently considering McDermott's own reflection on his Bills departure. Since Buffalo had moved on from him after nine seasons, McDermott admitted that the most important thing he learned from that period was that he should open up and not put on airs with his players. McDermott had been pitted against McVay in many head-to-head battles during his coaching career before they both took over the reigns of their teams in 2017. In his year out of coaching, he has the opportunity to study McVay without worrying about playing against him, and McDermott is not going to hide where he sees himself heading. He has openly stated his intention of going back to the NFL to win another title.
