Family-owned Louisville Mexican restaurant upgrading to former Chik'n & Mi location

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB+WAVE) — A family-owned Louisville Mexican restaurant will move into a larger space this fall. Adelita Mexican Restaurant is preparing to move from its location on Frankfort Avenue in Clifton to the former Chik'n & Mi building on Mellwood Avenue in Butchertown, according to our partners at Louisville Business First. The restaurant called the move a 'big step' and 'a new chapter.' 'More space, a new atmosphere, and a chance for us to continue growing while still bringing you the same homemade Mexican food, recipes, and love that made Adelita what it is today,' the restaurant said in a Facebook post. Adelita is hoping to open the new location in early October. It's an upgrade in space from 765 square feet at its current location to 4,300 square feet of space in the new building. 'We finally think that we've reached the limit toward where we need an expansion,' manager Alexander Gomez told LBF. 'We're going to go a little bit bigger with the menu, and we have a really nice cocktail menu. That great collaboration between good, authentic Mexican food and some really killer drinks is going to bring people in.' Gomez, 21, opened the restaurant with his mother and brother when he was 18. A fan favorite is the restaurant's homemade mole, which Gomez said is based on his grandmother's recipe and is made in-house. 'We're really excited to show people what we're capable of in a bigger spot since they already see what we're capable of in a small spot now,' Gomez said. The family put in about $100,000 to renovate the former Chik'n & Mi space, including upgrades to bathrooms, the kitchen and bar area. Gomez said he and his brother completed much of the design work and built the new bar. Chik'n & Mi closed in February after nine years in business. Adelita's Frankfort Avenue location will close when the new one opens, though Gomez said they're looking at the possibility of launching a different concept in the existing space.
