Woman airlifted to hospital after serious crash between truck and car in Wexford

A woman has been airlifted to Cork University Hospital following a serious road crash between a car and a truck on a rural Wexford road on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place on the R738 at Knockeen between Larkin's Cross and Furlongstown Cross, on the road to the village of Taghmon. The female passenger of the car is understood to be in a serious condition following the incident, while the male driver of the car was also rushed to Wexford General Hospital for treatment. There was a huge multi-agency response to the incident, with the National Ambulance Service, Air Ambulance, Fire Service and An Garda Síochána all in attendance at the scene. An emergency road closure was quickly put in place shortly before 4 p.m. and motorists were urged to avoid the area as diversions were put in place. The Coast Guard Rescue 117 helicopter also flew over the scene, before being stood down and returning to Waterford. A garda spokesperson confirmed that 'gardaí and emergency services are currently attending the scene of a road traffic collision on the R738 at Knockeen, Co. Wexford 'The road is closed and local diversions are in place.' The exact nature of the injuries sustained by those involved in the crash is currently unknown, with Gardaí stating that 'no further information is available at this time'. Gardaí say that the road closure is to remain in place 'until further notice'.
