Summer drug crackdown leads to nearly 50 arrests

ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) — Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies announced a summer enforcement effort that resulted in nearly 50 arrests, according to authorities. The Albany County Sheriff and federal authorities made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday morning, Sept. 8. Authorities said seven people now face federal charges under an indictment alleging drug trafficking and other offenses. Officials have not yet released additional details about who was arrested or where the arrests occurred. The U.S. Attorney said the indictments could lead to at least two people spending up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000. MORE: Operation Fast Track nets 83 arrests, drugs and 8 firearms across three counties Authorities also highlighted a one-week enforcement sweep in which 16 search warrants were served, resulting in more than 40 arrests. Officials said four suspected drug houses in Troy were shut down during the operation. The FBI said neighbors in the area were thrilled to see SWAT teams take down those drug houses. 'I saw neighbors clapping and cheering and thanking the law enforcement officers on scene,' said FBI Albany Special Agent in Charge Craig Tremaroli. 'It was clear to me they want to walk outside and live a normal life without dangerous drugs and violent criminals amongst them.' During the press conference, law enforcement officials emphasized cooperation among agencies. Albany Police Chief Brendan Cox noted that coordination between agencies was not always as strong as it is today and referenced lessons learned since the Sept. 11 attacks. Authorities said they are still compiling details on when and where the arrests occurred, who was arrested, and the specific charges filed. Police said the enforcement effort involved drug distribution charges, the recovery of illegal firearms, and the arrest of a sex offender.
