A new late-night bar promising disco balls, DJs and "absolute chaos" instead of live music has opened in Edinburgh's West End. The Shaker, located at 9 Shandwick Place, has launched in the premises formerly occupied by The Rat Pack Piano Bar, which closed in April. Organisers have explicitly ditched traditional acoustic sets in favour of a soundtrack featuring chart anthems, R&B, hip hop and house music. In a post on Facebook, The Shaker team said: 'No live music. No guitars. Just cocktails, DJs and absolute chaos until late. Edinburgh… are you ready to shake?' The party bar will be decked out with a ceiling of disco balls and have a drinks menu that leans heavily on shooters and shareable cocktail trays instead of a traditional cocktail list. Signature drinks include the Mini Star, a vanilla vodka, passionfruit and pineapple shot served with a small prosecco chaser, and the Short Island, a five spirit long island iced tea topped with a layered Pepsi float. Gavin Currie, Director of Operations, said: 'We're thrilled to finally open the doors at Shaker. The opening weekend exceeded everything we'd hoped for. The room was full, the music was spot on, and the atmosphere was exactly what we set out to create. 'The feedback from guests has been fantastic and bookings are already flying in for the weeks ahead. We can't wait to see where the next few months take us.' Opening hours vary throughout the week, from Sunday to Thursday the bar opens at 7pm building towards a busier crowd by 9pm. Meanwhile Friday sees doors open at 5pm and Saturday from 3pm. Every night runs until 3am, with resident DJs taking over at weekends and a curated playlist soundtracking the rest of the week from chart favourites, house singalongs, R&B, hip hop and crowd-pleasing party anthems. The Shaker has been created with a broad audience in mind, from Edinburgh's after-work crowd and students to groups looking for a bit of fun. The venue also aims to target large booking groups, offering free booth bookings with no minimum spend or deposit, along with options for larger private hire covering the whole room for birthdays, work nights out and bigger celebrations.
