What is Missouri football's record in Lawrence? MU's last win, history at KU

Missouri football has a chance for a quarter-century-long first this Friday. Mizzou has not won in Lawrence, Kansas, since 2001, which was Gary Pinkel's first season as the Tigers' head coach. That means, when Eli Drinkwitz leads his Tigers into David Booth Family Memorial Stadium on Friday night, 25 years will have passed since Missouri's last true road win against its bitter rivals. There are, of course, a few reasons for that. After Missouri left the Big 12 after the 2011 football season, the teams did not face off for 14 years. Mizzou won the first edition of the renewed rivalry 42-31 last season in Columbia. In the final five editions of Border War between the then-conference foes, the annual game was played in the final week of the regular season at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The last game between Mizzou and KU that was played in Lawrence was in 2005. Pinkel's Missouri teams went 1-2 in true road games at Kansas. After a 38-34 win in 2001, which marked one of the final games of Terry Allen's coaching tenure at KU, the Tigers lost in their next two trips to Lawrence in 2003 and 2005, when Mark Mangino was Kansas' coach. Kirk Farmer was the quarterback for Mizzou in the 2001 win. He threw for 246 yards, ran for 82 yards and tossed a game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Dwayne Blakely in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. The 2001 win ended an 11-year run without a win in Lawrence, with the Tigers' last victory in Kansas' stadium coming under coach Bob Stull in 1990. If Mizzou wins Friday night, with the 7 p.m. kickoff at Kansas set to air on FOX, then it will have just its third win in Lawrence in the past 36 years and just their fifth since 1970. Missouri is 20-28-4 all-time in Lawrence. MU claims a 58-54-9 overall series record, while KU's claimed record is 55-57-9. The record is disputed because of the 1960 matchup, which Kansas won 23-7 but was later ordered by the Big Eight to forfeit the game for fielding an ineligible player. Missouri will honor its 1960 team as national champions during its Week 3 game against Troy this year. Drinkwitz will be the first Mizzou coach to lead the Tigers into Lawrence since Pinkel, since the Tigers never played the Jayhawks under Barry Odom. The Tigers and Jayhawks currently are scheduled to next face off in 2031 in Columbia and in 2032 in Lawrence.
